Contemporaneity as a Survival Strategy: Changes in the Repertoire and Development Trends of the Old Theater of Vilnius in 2000–2025 (Summary)

The article examines the development of the repertoire of The Old Theatre of Vilnius from 2000 to 2025, focusing on the role of modernity as a survival strategy in the theatre’s artistic practice. The research object is the changes in the theatre’s repertoire, their connection to contemporary theatre trends (postdramatic theatre, performativity, interactivity, technological integration), and their impact on the theatre’s identity and its relationship with the audience. The article discusses the main forms of contemporary theatre in the repertoire of The Old Theatre of Vilnius, the perspectives of theatre managers and creators on modernity, and compares the theatre’s development with similar theatrical institutions in the Baltic States. The research applies theoretical approaches of postdramatic theatre, performativity, and cultural identity (H.-T. Lehmann, E. Fischer-Lichte, R. Schechner, P. Pavis, among others). The results of the analysis reveal that the integration of modernity has become a crucial strategic choice for the theatre, enabling it to remain competitive and relevant in the contemporary cultural field. The study employs qualitative content analysis, comparative case studies, and document analysis to consistently reveal the mechanisms of repertoire changes and their connections with contemporary theatre theories.
